The Indonesian government plans to introduce a "Work From Bali" scheme for civil servants aimed at helping to revive the island's battered economy. But not everyone is happy about it.
Public servants in Indonesia will soon be able to work from Bali through a government initiative to "revive the tourism and creative economy industry" on the island, but the program has also raised some eyebrows.
The Work From Bali (WFB) program, which will be finalised in the third quarter of this year, will send 25 per cent of Indonesian public servants from seven different ministries to live and work from hotels in Nusa Dua hotel complex.
Sixteen hotels managed by the state-owned enterprise Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation are so far involved.
The initiative came from Indonesia's Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy after the island of more than 4.3 million people lost approximately $4.3 billion worth of income due to the pandemic.
The deputy coordinating Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy Odo Manuhutu said the program would help in "building trust among [the] domestic public".
"Every single rupiah spent on the officials' trips to regions, including Bali, will have a direct, indirect, or induced multiple impacts on the local economy," he said.
