International Coastal Clean-up

Bali Hotels Association 25 September 2018

SEPTEMBER 2018. BALI – INDONESIA. On September 15, 2018, 128 members of the Bali Hotels Association took part in the International Coastal Cleanup Day, a program initiated by a non-profit organization, Ocean Conservancy, back in 1986 with more than 12 million volunteers worldwide today. Involving the local community, schools, and businesses, the cleanup took place in 15 different regions in Bali including Menjangan Island, Tabanan, Canggu Berawa, Seminyak, Kuta, Sanur, Ubud,Legian, Jimbaran, Tanjung Benoa, Nusa Dua to the eastern coast of Bali covering Karangasem region, Klungkung and Lembongan island.

“This initiative is one of our efforts to educate our members and their employees on the importance of preserving the environment – especially the ocean” explained Wayan Warta, Director of Environment for Bali Hotels Association. “At the moment, BHA is the only representative in Bali that has participated in the initiative annually since 2013, and Bali has become a part of the global community of the Ocean Conservancy volunteers.”

The International Coastal Cleanup Day initiative covers vast areas along the riverbanks and coastal lines, and volunteers are advised to use eco-friendly tools such as reusable trash bags. At the end of each cleanup, trash collected has to be categorized, weighed, and recorded before sent to the proper waste management. The report will later be submitted to the Ocean Conservancy headquarter by the volunteer.

Being crowned as the world’s top destination, Bali is known for its unique culture, art, and nature – especially its long coastal lines. However, the island does face several issues related to tourism growth – one of which is the washed up trash that polluted most of Bali’s beaches every year.

“The association, as one of Bali’s tourism stakeholders, will always give our utmost support to the officials for their “Clean and Green” Bali program as well as encouraging our members to become eco-friendly hotels,” said Wayan. “Our members have practiced green efforts in their day to day operations such as minimizing paper and plastic waste, energy saving and applying the responsible way of managing their wastes. By doing so, we hope to be able to ensure a sustainable practice for Bali’s tourism.”

Bali Hotels Association is a professional group of star-rated hotels and resorts in Bali. Members include General Managers from more than 150 hotels and resorts in Bali that representing more than 24,000 hotel rooms and almost 33,000 employees in the tourism sector.
